In winter female trees\u2019 branches sport<br \/>red berries that are prized by birds and other wildlife. Many nurseries offer<br \/>the female trees under the name \u201cdeciduous yaupon.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Planting Sites:<\/strong> An understory plant, possumhaw grows in full sun, part shade or dappled shade. It needs at least 6<br \/>hr. of sun to be fully covered with berries. It is adaptable to various soil types: caliche, sand, loam or clay. It has<br \/>low to moderate water demands and withstands seasonal poor drainage. It\u2019s a tough plant!<\/p><p><strong>Planting Instructions:<\/strong> Dig hole 2 to 3 times larger than, but the same depth as, the nursery container. Carefully<br \/>remove plant from container, gently loosen any compacted soil around the root ball and pull out circling roots.<br \/>Plant rootball slightly higher than the surrounding soil. Add 2\u201d &#8211; 3\u201d of mulch.<\/p><p><strong>Watering Instructions:<\/strong> Pre-soak the planting hole and water deeply after planting, using root stimulator according<br \/>to directions. For at least 3 months, water deeply every 7-10 days to promote deep roots that will withstand<br \/>drought. May skip a watering after a rainfall of \u00bd\u201d to 1\u201d. Once established, possumhaw holly is drought-tolerant.<\/p><p><strong>Comments:<\/strong> For a female tree to produce berries, a male tree must be in the area. Possumhaw is a host plant for<br \/>the dusky-blue groundstreak butterfly.
