Pink Evening Primrose

Oenothera speciosa

Plant Name: Pink Evening Primrose, Showy Evening Primrose, Mexican Evening Primrose, Showy Primrose, Pink Ladies, Buttercups, Pink Buttercups Oenothera speciosa

As the common name implies, most evening primrose species open their flowers in the evening, closing them again early each morning.

Planting Sites: Plant pink evening primrose in loose, well-draining soil for best results. It does fine in rocky, sandy, or clay soil types.

Planting Instructions: Space plants 3’ apart. Dig hole slightly larger than, but the same depth as, the nursery
container. Carefully remove plant from container and gently loosen any compacted soil or roots around the root
ball. Plant at the same depth as the soil in the container. Add 2 to 3 inches of mulch.

Watering Instructions: A moderate consumer of water, pink evening primrose blooms best when it receives a steady supply of water. In the first year, it’s recommended that you water this plant weekly to help it thrive, but moving forward, available rainfall is generally sufficient.

Comments: Seed capsules attract birds, especially finches, and various mammals.
