Little Bluestem

Schizachyrium scoparium

Plant Name: Little Bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium Little Bluestem is a very ornamental bunchgrass with fine-textured foliage that forms very dense mounds 18-24 inches tall. Slender blue-green stems often reach 5 feet and becomes radiant mahogany-red with white, shining seed tufts in the fall.

Planting Sites: Well-drained soil. Sandy, Sandy Loam, Medium Loam, Clay Loam, Clay, Limestone-based

Planting Instructions: Dig hole slightly larger than, but the same depth as, the nursery container. Carefully remove
plant from container and gently loosen any compacted soil or roots around the root ball. Plant at the same depth
as the soil in the container. Add 2 to 3 inches of mulch.

Watering Instructions: Low Drought-resistance

Comments: Attracts Birds and Butterflies. Graze, Cover, Nesting material, Seeds-Small mammals, Seeds-granivorous birds. Larval Host Ottoe Skipper, Indian Skipper, Crossline Skipper, Dusted Skipper, Cobweb butterfly, Dixie skipper . Deer Resistant is High.
