Zexmenia
Wedelia texana
Zexmenia is a long-lived perennial that is evergreen in mild winters. It grows
in a rounded mound 1.5 – 3 feet tall. Orange-yellow flowers appear from
April to November. Sheer plant after each bloom flush to encourage more
bloom and control size. Hairy leaves can cause itching on sensitive skin.
Freely reseeds.
Planting Sites: Well-drained sand, loam, clay, or calcareous soils in part or full sun.
Planting Instructions: Space plants 2 feet apart. Dig hole slightly larger than, but the same depth as the nursery
container. Carefully remove plant from container and gently loosen any compacted soil around the root ball.
Plant at the same depth as the soil in the container. Add 2 to 3 inches of mulch.
Watering Instructions: Water well after planting, using root stimulator according to directions. For at least 3
months, water deeply every 7-10 days to promote deep roots that will withstand drought. Skip a watering after a
rainfall of ½” to 1”. Once established, zexmenia is very drought-tolerant.
Comments: Over-watering and shade will cause the plant to be leggy. Zexmenia is moderately deer resistant. It
attracts butterflies and is the larval host for the Bordered Patch, Sierran Metalmark, Lacinia Patch butterflies.
