Gulf Muhly

Muhlenbergia capillaris

Gulf muhly is a perennial grass that grows 1.5′ -3′ tall. The grass has a large, airy, much- branched seed
head that is up to half as long as the entire plant. The spikelets are purple. In fall the plant takes on a
feathery, deep pink hue, creating a stunning pink to lavender floral display.

Planting Sites: Sandy soil, sandy loam or clay soil in full sun or part shade. Moderate water usage.
Planting Instructions: Space plants 2′ apart. Dig hole slightly larger than, but the same depth as the nursery container. Carefully
remove plant from container and gently loosen any compacted soil or roots around the root ball. Plant at the same depth as the soil in
the container. Add 2 to 3 inches of mulch.

Watering Instructions: Water well after planting, using a root stimulator mixed according to directions. For about 3 months, water
deeply when top 2 – 3″ of soil is dry to promote deep roots that will withstand drought. Skip a watering after a rainfall of 34″ to 1″.
Once established, gulf muhly is drought-tolerant.

Comments: Gulf muhly functions well in meadow gardens or as a general garden plant. Most effective when several plants are grouped
together. Deer resistant.
