A bi-monthly Demonstration Garden Workday was held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the Museum of Texas Handmade Furniture (known by some as part of the grounds on which Folkfest is held).
The latest area receiving TLC is near the Sewing Haus. The bed is centered by a Wafer Ash or Common Hop Tree (Ptelea trifoliata) and presently bordered by Autumn Sage (Salvia greggii). The tree’s “common” name refers to a reported use in earlier days of the bitter fruit as a substitute for hops in brewing beer by the local German immigrants.
The bed is being enlarged and a pea gravel path installed around the perimeter. The pea gravel path will eventually be connected to other pathways on the property to benefit visitors who want to experience the grounds in a natural way.
Volunteer help is welcomed; and Texas Master Naturalists can earn hours toward their annual 40 hours of volunteer service. Check the Lindheimer chapter’s calendar for work dates at www.npsot.org/calendar OR just remember that Demonstration Garden Workdays are on the second Wednesday and fourth Thursday of every month for the Texas Museum of Handmade Furniture (contact Craig Bruska for details at craigbruska@hotmail.com).
